Investment Opportunity in Providing Grain Dehulling Services in The Agricultural Sector in Nigeria

Nigeria’s climate permits the cultivation of a variety of crops in a pattern that emerged in earlier centuries in response to local conditions. One such category of crops produced are grains. A grain is a small, hard, dry seed, with or without an attached hull or fruit layer, harvested for human or animal consumption. A grain crop is a grain-producing plant. The two main types of commercial grain crops are cereals and legumes.

A grain dehuller or grain husker is an agricultural machine used to automate the process of removing the chaff (the outer husks) of grains. Traditionally, the grains would be pounded using some form of mortar and pestle.

Some grains are dehulled at 60 to 70% effectiveness on the first pass and therefore require several passes through the dehuller, especially if they are soft grains. The dehuller can be used effectively on wheat, millet and buckwheat, but not oats.

Some grains produced in Nigeria includes

Sorghum

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a cultivated tropical cereal grass. It is generally, although not universally, considered to have first been domesticated in North Africa, possibly in the Nile or Ethiopian regions as recently as 1000 BC1. The cultivation of sorghum played a crucial role in the spread of the Bantu (black) group of people across sub-Saharan Africa.

Today, sorghum is cultivated across the world in the warmer climatic areas. It is quantitatively the world’s fifth largest most important cereal grain, after wheat, maize, rice and barley. In Africa, sorghum is still largely a subsistence food crop, but as report will show it is increasingly forming the foundation of successful food and beverage industries in Nigeria.

Nigeria is the second largest producer of sorghum, with the majority of domestic production used for household consumption/fodder. Sorghum is produced in virtually all the states in Nigeria, though some states produce more than others.

Rice

Paddy Rice is the raw material required in the production of rice. Paddy rice is, for the most part, grown by small farmers in Nigeria; over 30% of rice growers cultivate less than 1 ha, and close to 60% less than 5 ha. Although the paddy harvest rose from under 1 million tons in the 1970s to 4.2 million tons in 2010, production has not kept pace with demand.

Paddy rice is grown in the following states of the federation Anambra, Sokoto, Niger, Ebonyi, Ogun etc

Cowpea

Cowpea grain contains about 25% protein, and 64% carbohydrate and its potential in the alleviation of malnutrition among resource poor farmers is inestimable. Cowpea flour is used in the preparation of akara (fried cowpea paste), danwake (cowpea dumplings) and moin-moin (steamed cowpea paste) and surely provides working mother the opportunity to prepare this favorite meal with the comfort it provides. Some of the cowpea producing states in Nigeria include Kano, Kaduna, Gombe, Zamfara etc

Some of states that sorghum in large quantity in Nigeria includes Plateau, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Nassarawa and Taraba. The raw materials are also readily available.

There is enormous demand of dehulling Machine in both Nigeria market as there a number of grains from the farm that needs the service. Nigeria produces in commercial quantities grains like sorghum, maize, rice etc.
