VEGETABLE OIL PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING IN NIGERIA.{ GROUNDNUT SEED AS THE RAW MATERIALS}

Any nation that requires development must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon, Nigeria has comparative in the Agricultural sector where a variety of products are produced due to the favorable climatic condition ,good soil condition and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

Different oil bearing seed are produced in Nigeria to include cotton seed, groundnut seed, palm kernel seed, sesame seed, melon seed of which vegetable oil can be extracted from.

Due to the ban on the importation of vegetable oil, the nation has witnessed a deficit in supply of the product though much improvement has been recorded in the local production of the product.

Ground nut kernel contains 50-55% of oil. The oil obtained from the kernel is yellow to greenish yellow in colour with chief constituents of glycerides of oleic and linoleic acids with lesser amounts of the glycerides of palmitic, stearic, arachidic, behenic, and lignoceric acid.

The oil is used as a substitute for olive oil and other edible oils, soaps, salad and cooking oil, mayonnaise and margarine. The meal is an important component of feeds for poultry and cattle.

The production process for the production of vegetable oil is given below

Groundnut ‘Decorticator’ shells the groundnut into husks and kernels. Husks are thrown away by built in air blower and kernels are screened to separate split kernels from whole kernels. Runs on 2 H.P. Motor. 100 kg of groundnut gives about 73 kg kernels & 27 kg husks.

Cooking kettle heats and cooks the kernels or oilseeds by outer steam or by electricity. A little steam / water is also added to the oilseeds to increase moisture content to optimum level. Kettle is mounted on the expeller and is driven from expeller.Expeller crushes oilseeds producing oil and oil cake.

Filter press filters the oil. Filtered oil is completely pure and fresh natural edible oil.

Boiler provides process steam to the cooking kettle. Husks are used as fuel in the boiler. Any agricultural waste or wood can be used. Water feed pump is mounted on the boiler itself. BOILER IS NOT REQUIRED IF ELECTRICAL KETTLE IS USED.

Neutralizer removes free fatty acids from cottonseed oil by adding caustic soda. It is driven by 1 H.P. Motor. Castor oil also can be heated into neutralizer by steam coils inside the neutralizer.

The market for vegetable oil and groundnut cake is national. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for edible oil.

The demand is high but local supply low hence the need for importation in the past. Industry data suggest that Nigerian consumers use more than one million {1,000,000} tones of vegetable oil annually.

In 2005, in order to stimulate local production and attain self sufficiency in vegetable oil production, the government introduced the presidential initiative on the development of edible oil over a period not exceeding three {3} years.

Under this initiative, attention was focused on the promotion of eleven scheduled oil seed crops which are oil palm seed, groundnut seed, Soya beans seed, cotton seed etc and production target was set for each of the crops under the programme as follow

1. Oil Palm: 1 million hectares capacity of producing 15 million fresh fruit bunches
2. Groundnut: 15 million tons annually
3. Soya beans: 670,000 1 million tons per annum
4. Seed Cotton: 1 million tons over the plan period

After about seven {7} years of the initiative, the domestic edible oil demand far exceeds the national production. The short fall in supply is estimated at about 300,000 tons per year.

From the above figures, it is clear that there is a large and sustainable market for vegetable oil in Nigeria.

LIVESTOCK FEED PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

In one of my articles we wrote about the investment opportunity in processing of bone and meat meal to be used in the production of livestock feed. Our subject of discussion on this article would be on the production of livestock feeds.

Nigeria, with a population of about 140,000,000 people is grossly underprovided with an essential food component, which is protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian.

In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.This scenario is compounded more so when the volume of egg supply is very low, being 10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day. This recommendation would imply a crate of 30 eggs per month. This story also holds for other meat products including, chicken.

To ameliorate this problem of low-level of protein intake, there is the need for concerted effort, among the various stakeholders to bring about the massive production of protein based food items at competitive costs so that they would be affordable to the general masses. Aside from the other necessary economic reforms, massive investment poultry farming is one way of resolving the problem and invariably in the production of livestock feeds.

Poultry birds require different food formations at different stages of their lives. Some of the feed required is chicks mash, layers mash, broiler mash and growers mash.

Equipments required for production includes grinding machine, mixing machine, weighing scale and generating set. All the equipment is locally available.

It makes sense to invest in livestock feed production in Nigeria where over 70% of the cost of operating a farm is spent on feeding. The market is large, expanding and sustainable.

For a small scale production of about 2.5 per day, we expect a profit of between N 120-000 to N 150,000 monthly.

Other source of income for the investors includes processing for other poultry farmers and trading on the raw material.

MELON SEED DECORTICATION BUSINESS IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITIES.

There are two major seasons in Nigeria – the wet and dry seasons. The total annual rainfall decreases from 3,800mm at Forcados on the coast to below 650mm at Maiduguri in the north east of the country.

The length of the rainy seasons also decreases from nearly 12 months in the south to below 5 months in the North. Nigeria has relatively high temperatures throughout the year. The average annual maximum varies from 35 C in the north to 31 C in the south while the average annual minimum ranges from 23 C in the south to 18 C in the north.

This variability of the climate not only affects agricultural but also the type and distribution of the crops cultivated in different parts of the country.

One of such agricultural product it affects is melon seed, which is mainly found in the southern part of the country. Melon seeds {egwusi} is one of the major delicious soup making ingredients in Nigeria and apart from the climate which affects it distribution and production, requires that the shell be decorticated before it can be processed for consumption.

The manual decortication of egwusi which is mostly in use in Nigeria is not only time consuming and slow but also can be drudgery. The effect of this that output is usually low and sometime creating scarcity of the product with it associated the high cost especially in non producing areas during off season.

However, with recent advances in the fabrication of machines in Nigeria, melon shell decorticating can be fabricated thereby aiding the decorticating of the product, increasing output, creating employment and wealth for savvy investors.

The market for egwusi in Nigeria is national, sustainable and growing.

The investor can choose to only decorticated the product and then package or after decorticating the product, grind and then package. The final product can be packed in sachets or small plastic containers.

To sell decorticated melon seed {egwusi} in Nigeria or, the investor might have to register with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control {NAFDAC} in Nigeria and at such the promoters would have to ensure that the production meets good quality standard by ensuring stringent and hygienic condition prevail at the production plant.

PROCESSING GUM ARABIC FOR HUGE PROFIT IN NIGERIA.

As the world continues to grapple climate change and its effect on the socio-economic life of ordinary people, Nigeria is presented with a great opportunity to exploit the twin benefit of fighting desert encroachment and increasing the earning power of her citizens through massive investment in the cultivation of gum Arabic.

Gum arabic is a leguminous tree species that is well adapted to sudan and sahelian agro-ecology of Africa and it produces a natural gum made of hardened sap mostly taken from three species of the acacia tree; Acacia senegal (Grade 1), Acacia seyal(Grade 2) and Combretum though the major Acacia utilized for commercial Gum Arabic production in Nigeria are Acacia Senegal and Acacia seyal.

Nigeria currently produces about 20,000 MT of gum Arabic annually ranking second in the world with Sudan as the leading producer and Chad after Nigeria as the third largest producer of the product whose world production as been estimated at 70,000 MT annually. From available data Africa produces about 98% of the world requirement of gum Arabic.

Gum Arabic is used as thickener, suspender, emulsifier, stabilizer, flavour carrier, binder and encapsulating material. In addition, it is used in confectionaries, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries.

Some of the producing states in Nigeria includes Adamawa,Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Nasarawa ,Niger and Zamfara. Though Borno and Yobe states are the major producers in Nigeria

Much has been said and written on the investment opportunity available in the trading of raw gum Arabic but the essence of this article is to stress the need for the processing of the product into refined Gum Arabic powder. The processing technique is quite simple; it involves the sorting, crushing, dispersion in water, purification, precipitation and separation.

It is a generally believe that Nigeria is not fully taking advantage of the large land available for the cultivation of the product, having little from the producing trees and at such, our production of about 20,000 MT annually is low compared to our potential. Perhaps the most neglected area is in the area of processing, most of the product are harvested and sold as a raw instead of adding value to the product before selling.

The country earned US$88.08 million in 2004 through the export of the raw form of the product whereas the country stands to gain US$5.00 for every one kilogramme of processed Gum Arabic.

A number of incentives have been put together to encourage investment in agriculture. These include;

o Finance Credit

o Tax Holdings

o Reduced Customs Charges on Imported Inputs

o Technical Support through Research Institutions

o Export Financing and Guarantee

o Agricultural Insurance Scheme

o Extension Services
