WASTE CAR BATTERY RECYCLING IN NIGERIA; WASTE TO WEALTH SERIES.

So much as been said about the number and age of the vehicles on our roads and the traffic jams they cause daily. Apart from the effect on the environment as a result of the large petroleum product which these cars consumes daily in order to be on the road, virtually every part of the car can be recycled and re-used thereby helping to conserve scare natural resources which otherwise would have been used in the production of new product.

One of the such products that can be recycled from cars are batteries, which every car and vehicle use in order to power the engine.

Lead acid batteries either start or power cars, trucks, buses, boats, trains, rapid mass-transit systems, recreational vehicles and electric wheelchairs all over the globe. The car battery also provides a stable electrical supply to a vehicle’s electrical system.

Batteries are composed of different material but by far the most common are those made from lead. Batteries are made up of 98% of cell {lead} and 2% of plastic.

Battery recycling can be done in two {2} levels namely the use of hi-tech machinery and equipment or with the use of crude implements like iron pot and burners.

For the hi-tech processing, some of the equipment required includes the crushing plant, smelting plant, Refining and casting plant.

From recycled car battery, lead ingot of high quality can be obtained and exported to foreign counties where they are used in the production of brand new car batteries and other lead based product.s

Part of the benefit of recycling waste car battery include

  • Saves Natural Resources
  • Saves Energy
  • Saves Clean Air and Water
  • Saves Landfill Space
  • Saves Money and Creates Jobs

In Nigeria, opportunities exist for the recycling of batteries and in order to encourage the local industry, there is a ban on the export of used batteries in the country.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN WASTE MANAGEMENT THROUGH PUBLIC –PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERSHIP.

Lagos is regarded as the commercial capital of Nigeria and the nation’s centre of excellence. With a population of over 18,000,000 people and generating 9,000 tones of waste per day, Lagos has an expanding and sustainable need for investment in the management of waste.

The investment required in the sector cannot be met with the resources of the state alone given the need for the development of other key infrastructures and services and at such the need for public – private sector partnership {PPP}.

Public-private sector partnership (PPP) is a strategic partnership between government and the private sector that leverages on the strength of both parties in the provision of socio-economic infrastructure for the benefit of all. In this relationship, government is expected to create the right investment climate for the private sector to succeed while the private sectors (investors) are expected to bring to bear their expertise, fund and resource.

LAWMA, the agency responsible for waste management in Lagos state has come to terms with the waste disposal challenge in Lagos and realizes that huge amount of resources is needed to resolve the waste disposal problem. Consequently, the organization came up with what is called the PSP program – Private Sector Participation in waste disposal drive.

With this strategy, organizations interested in investing in the waste disposal and management industry are required to register with LAWMA. They are then inducted on safe and efficient waste disposal strategies and LAWMA’s mode of operation.

These organizations then get contracted as representatives of LAWMA in waste disposal.

Though a lot of investment opportunities exist in waste management such as

waste conversion, wheeler bins, motorised street cleaners and waste transfer loading stations, the focus of this article is on operating waste compactor trucks in partnership with the waste management authority in Lagos.

Lagos needs 450 compactors for the efficient transport of refuse. The state anticipates being able to supply 200 (with the input of local companies). The shortfall of 250 compactor trucks represents an opening for investors.

TOOTHPICK PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

So much has been said and written about the investment opportunities in the agricultural sector in Nigeria especially in crop, livestock and fishery production to the disadvantage of the forestry sub sector. This situation has lead to the forestry sub sector contributing only 3% of the over 40% presently been contributed to the gross domestic product of the country by the agricultural sector.

This can be attribution to lack of information / interest and investment in the sub sector for a very long time. Forestry apart from providing us with industrial wood can also be used for leisure purpose. One of the products can be gotten from forest is bamboo.

Bamboo is a grass plant with hard hollow stem. They are the largest members of the grass family and are mainly found in the tropical region. Bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world and they are of economic and cultural significance as a food source, building material and a versatile raw product.

One of the uses of bamboo is the production of tooth picks. Tooth picks is a small stick of wood , plastic , bamboo or other substance used to remove detritus from the teeth usually after a meal.

The product is not subject to expiry timelines and there are two models toothpick production lines. One is bamboo toothpick production line and wooden toothpick production line.

Some of the equipment required for the production of tooth pick includes

1 Sawing Machine (bamboo) 1
2 Bamboo Dissection Madhine 1
3. Flaker 1
4 Fix and turn on one slice of machines thick and definitely wide 1
5 Bamboo filament shaping machine 1
6 Bamboo filament set-size machine 1
7 Toothpicks Polishing Machine 1
8 Toothpicks set-size Machine 1
9 Toothpicks mincing Machine (unicuspid or two side) 1
10 Multi sharpen machine

Typically the production process for toothpick can be divided into three [3} namely the log stage, the billet state and the finishing. A detailed analysis of each of the stages is given below.

The Log Stage

The process of making a toothpick begins with birch logs. The logs are lifted by grippers into a de-barker, which in two passes of the blade creates a smooth, barkless cylinder. The log is then transported into the unraveling machine, which strips the log like paper (1.06 mm thick) using 12 blades.

The Billet Stage

The end result of the unraveling machine is a billet. A billet (1.8 kilos) is manually removed and carried to a puncher. The puncher cuts identical toothpick strips at the rate of 8,000 toothpicks per second. The end result, however, is a small, soft piece of wood.

The Finishing Stage

These soft toothpicks are hardened in a dryer for 12 hours and then polished using talcum powder and friction for another four hours. The hardened toothpicks then pass through a sifter that removes damaged toothpicks. The acceptable toothpicks are sorted into a blower and conveyor that counts and packages them at the rate of 747,500 per hour.

The finished product can be packed in plastic containers in different sizes to suit the demands of the market.

The market for toothpick in Nigeria is large and sustainable with a national population of 165,000,000 people. With most of the tooth pick products in the market been imported, the investor can be assured a ready market for the product.

Some of the likely buyers include hotels, restaurants, household etc.
