Sesame Oil Production In Nigeria; The Feasibility Report

30,000.00

Sesame seeds (or sesamum or benniseed) are the seeds of the tropical annual Sesamum indicum.

Based on their colour difference, sesame seed in Nigeria can be classified into two {2} types namely the white/raw and brown/mixed.

Description

The White (Food Grade) seed is grown around the towns of Keffi, Lafia/Makurdi, Doma, and in Nassarawa, Taraba, and Benue States. It is easier to sort and the Fumani/Denin people consume sesame locally.

Sesame oil (also known as gingelly oil or til oil) is an edible vegetable oil derived from sesame seeds. Besides being used as a cooking oil, it is often used as a flavor enhancer in Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Korean, and Southeast Asian cuisine.
Sesame seed contains 45% of oil, 48% cake with 7% oil content in the cake.  Sesame cake is an important component of feeds for poultry and cattle.

The production process of vegetable oil from sesame seed is given below

Seed and Nut Preparation

The sesame seed are properly selected, cleaned and weighed appropriately.

Expelling

The oil is expelled from the seed using a mechanical oil expeller

Filtration

The extracted oil is filtered to remove suspended particles using a filter press.

Mixing

All the additives {Antioxidants, foaming agents} are thoroughly mixed.

Filling

The filtered oil is filled into 1 Litre plastic containers.

Labeling

The filled containers are labeled for proper identification.

Packaging

The bottled oils are placed in cartoons of 12 bottles.

The demand is high but local supply low hence the need for importation in the past. Industry data suggest that Nigerian consumers use more than one million {1,000,000} tones of vegetable oil annually.
