Poultry: Full turket lap, Chest, wing, Gizzard etc

The market for frozen food is national. The consumption of Frozen Chicken, Turkey and Fish in Nigeria is very high, especial in urban centers like Lagos, Kano, Portharcourt and Abuja etc

With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for frozen food.

The market for frozen food in Nigeria increased at a compound annual rate of 4.2% between 2003 and 2008. Demand is usually high during festive period.

The price per carton for fish depends on the type. For a carton of N11,000 while the Titus variety goes for N6,800. Kote is 30kg while Titus is 20kg. A carton of turkey goes for N6,100 and sells for N6,500. A carton of chicken now goes for N4,500 and sells for N5,000 – N5,100.

FISH FEED IMPORTATION IN NIGERIA, THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria is said to be the highest importer of frozen fish in the world. However, Nigeria’s ecological and climatic conditions put the country at an advantage for the production of a wide range of fishes in order to attain food security.

Availability of high quality fish feed is one of the greatest problems that affects the expansion of the small scale fish industries in Nigeria.Fish feed business is a billion-dollar industry, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Feeds are so important in raising fish that some breeders even have their own feed manufacturing operation on-site.

Feed for fish mostly consists of grain.  Catfish feeds contain grain or grain by-products that are rich in starch. In addition to providing an inexpensive energy source, starch helps bind feed ingredients together and increases expansion of extruded feeds so that the feed pellets are water stable and float in the water. A typical catfish feed contains 25 percent or more of digestible carbohydrates.

Fish feed is processed by compression, pelleting or extrusion. Existing pelletizers in Nigeria are not adequate for production of highly demanded fish feeds like floating types that can be done through extrusion.

This is because they sink rapidly when thrown in pond or tank, any raw starch in the diet is left uncooked, pollutes the water in the pond and tendency to crumble, produce much dust and gets wasted due to inability to detect when the fishes are satisfied with feeding.

Food extrusion is a process in which food ingredients are forced to flow, under one or several conditions of mixing, heating and shear, through a die that forms and/or puff-dries the ingredients. Extruded floating feeds are preferred by many farmers because they allow observation of the feeding process thereby preventing wasteful

feeding, facilitates the inactivation and destruction of heat labile anti-nutritional factors and other contaminants and they are extremely stable in water. Also, the higher temperatures employed during extrusion cooking facilitate the rupture of the cellulose membrane surrounding the plant cell and individual starch granules of cereals and oilseeds, with consequent starch gelatinization and increased carbohydrate and calorific bioavailability.

An extruder can influence the texture of the pellet varying in hardness, brittleness and cohesiveness. Density can also be influenced, resulting in sinking and floating properties adjusted to the fish eating behaviour.

Extruded feeds are more cost efficient, improve quality of ratio and increase profitability for importers, compounder and farmer.

Nigeria’s fish sector grew rapidly over the past three years after more than a decade of decline. The growth in Nigeria’s fish sector is constrained by the persistent scarcity and high cost of major feed inputs such as corn and soybean meal. A major problem of the

local poultry industry is the irregular and limited supply of all raw materials that are grown in Nigeria. Prior to 2000, white maize and other Nigerian grown cereals were the main components of the ration, however with the reduced production of white maize coupled with increased consumption for humans, a grain shortage developed.

The GON lifted the import ban on corn in 2000 but imposed a duty of 70 percent to discourage imports. Corn prices over the past three years have averaged close to $300/MT.

Nigeria’s feed production is expanding rapidly in step with growth in the fish industry. Imported fish feed accounts for approximately 75 percent of the total feed produced in Nigeria and about 70 percent of the cost of producing proteins of animal sources can be attributed to animal feeds.

Nigeria imports between 700,000 and 900,000 metric tons of fish annually with the effort of the government to encourage local production of fish, investment in fish feed importation would contribute greatly to the development of animal protein supply in the country.

BITUMEN IMPORTATION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Bitumen is a mixture of organic liquids that are highly viscous, black, sticky, entirely soluble in carbon disulfide, and composed primarily of highly condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Naturally occurring or crude bitumen is a sticky, tar-like form of petroleum which is so thick and heavy that it must be heated or diluted before it will flow. At room temperature, it has a consistency much like cold molasses. Refined bitumen is the residual (bottom) fraction obtained by fractional distillation of crude oil. It is the heaviest fraction and the one with the highest boiling point, boiling at 525 °C (977 °F). It can also be refined to produce commercial products such as gasoline, fuel oil and asphalt.

The Nigerian bitumen deposit put at 42.74 billion metric tons is the second largest in the world and was first discovered in 1900. It covers 120 kilometres costal belts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Edo States.

Nigeria being one of the largest producers of crude oil however, the mid-stream sector of the oil and gas sector has made her heavily dependent on importing refined petroleum products and this includes bitumen.

It is estimated that the current world use of bitumen is approximately 102 million tonnes per year. Currently, Nigeria’s annual consumption of bitumen is a little over 500,000 metric tonnes and the market has been quite stable and increasing due to the epileptic performance of the kaduna refinery which is the only refinery in the country that produces bitumen at the moment.

There are different grades of bitumen with regards to specifications and this does not only apply to nigeria alone
but also many parts of the world. The gap created by the mid stream sector has made the importation process of bitumen a
lucrative gold mine while allowing the few players in the industry smiling.

It is also very interesting to note that imported bitumen is cheaper than the local one produced at the refinery thus making the import angle very lucrative while efforts are still made to meet the local demand of the product.

Approximately 85% of all the bitumen produced is used as the binder in asphalt for roads. It is also used in other paved
areas such as airport runways, car parks and footways.

The Bitumen 60/70 is usually blended with solvents like DPK to produce other grades of the product called Cutbacks. An example of the cutback are MCO, MC1, S125 and Colas A.

The above grades are usually applied during the various stages of road & building construction. Bitumen 60/70 is also mixed with granite to produce ASPHALT which is the major product used for road construction.

Economic returns from bitumen importation include capital gains and contribution to road maintenance. Presently, Nigeria, which has 59,892 km of paved roads with an additional 1,194 km of dual carriageway, the longest in Africa, spends an estimated N 300,000,000,000 {three hundred billion naira} annually on importation of asphalt, a bitumen derivative.
