Ethanol Importation in Nigeria; The Opportunities.

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, ETOH) is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic, agreeable odor. In dilute aqueous solution, it has a somewhat sweet flavor, but in more concentrated solutions it has a burning taste. Ethanol, CH3CH2OH, is an alcohol, a group of chemical compounds whose molecules contain a hydroxyl group, -OH, bonded to a carbon atom.

The word alcohol derives from Arabic al-kuhul, which denotes a fine powder of antimony produced by distilling antimony and used as an eye makeup. Alcohol originally referred to any fine powder, but medieval alchemists later applied the term to the refined products of distillation, and this led to the current usage.

Ethyl alcohol or ethanol can either be produced by direct fermentation of cassava, corn, cane juice or from molasses (any agricultural product that has starch contents), which is a by-product of the sugar manufacturing process. In Nigeria, ethanol can be produced only from cassava whereas, in india molasses is used and mills in Brazil produce ethanol directly from sugarcane juice. Ethanol can be used for potable alcohol industry, chemical industry and as a bio-fuel in vehicles (direct/blended with gasoline).

In Nigeria, ethanol is consumed primarily by portable alcohol industry and chemical industries.

Nigeria currently spends N 160 billion annually to import ethanol for industrial use while local production only accounts for 3% of ethanol consumption in the country.

With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum, an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five (5) years, Nigeria has a large market for ethanol.

Some of the major consumers of ethanol in Nigeria includes

1) Alcoholic / Beverages Industries: In the production of The many products of various gin, brandy, whisky, wine, etc
2) Cosmetics Production: For the production of perfumes, dyes, after-shave lotions, etc.
3) Paint Industries: Paint makers consume a lot of ethanol during the production of certain paints and thinners.
4) Pharmaceutical Industries: Pharmaceutical Industries use ethanol in the production of some drugs

The domestic demand for ethanol is estimated at over four hundred (400,000,000) million litres annually while local production is about nine – ten (9,000,000 – 10,000,000) litres per annum.

Importation of Liquified Petroleum Gas Cylinder in Nigeria; The Opportunities

Petroleum products are among the most valuable natural resources abundantly available in our country. Nigerians and people everywhere use petroleum products as a fuel in their automobiles, generating sets, industrial plants and for cooking purposes, thus making petroleum products an essential commodity that is needed for the daily operations of individual, industrial and national activities.

With huge gas reserves of one hundred and eighty-five (185,000,000,00) trillion cubic feet and the Nigerian government’s strong commitment to developing the gas industry through the Gas Master Plan, there are a lot of emerging opportunities for investors in the sub- sector.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is used as fuel for cooking and heating in the manufacturing Industry. It is also used for power generation.

L.P.G or Liquefied Petroleum Gas is the general name for propane (C3 H8) and butane gases (C4 H10), either stored together at varying percentages or separately. Butane usually comes in blue cylinders, while propane comes in red cylinders if stored separately.

As a fuel, L.P.G has several advantages over other fuels, including:

Weight and portability- Though heavier than air, L.P.G is approximately just half the weight of water, thus making it easier to be stored in pressure cylinders and tanks and hence, could easily be transported over long distances.

Cleaner- L.P.G burns cleanly and virtually without any soot as it mixes completely with air, which creates a perfect combustion with low carbon and sulphur emissions.

Odourless- Compared to other fuels, L.P.G is an odourless fuel. However, some suppliers usually add odorants in order for leakages to be easily perceived and detected.

Non- toxic- L.P.G is non- toxic. Prolonged and sudden exposure to it in reasonable quantity could however, cause cold burns and suffocation.

Cheaper- Compared to other fuels and even electricity, L.P.G is more cost effective.

Complexity and maintenance- L.P.G installations are less complicated, easy to maintain and even requires less maintenance.

With less than one kilogram per capita consumption, Nigeria ranks among the lowest liquefied petroleum gas consuming states in Africa despite its huge gas resources.

Although, the market is currently fraught with decayed infrastructure, the five- year growth projection of the Federal Government, according to experts, will attract investment across the LPG value chain from storage, logistics, to filling plants and cylinders, among others.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder is an essential item for filling liquefied petroleum gas used for cooling purpose. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder consisting of 3 main parts: body, foot ring and valve guard ring.

The body of LPG cylinder is deep drawn in two pieces then these are welded together to make a compact unit without any leak and defect etc. The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder can be produced in 3 KG, 6.25 KG, 12.5 KG and 50 KG capacities.

To ascertain the quality, safety and performance certain regulations are applicable such as NIS 69: 2006 standardization. The LPG Cylinder is regarded by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as a high risk item of import due to its use in gas storage for domestic cooking and several other purposes. For this reason, SON has taken measures to ensure that the item passes through repeated scrutiny before being imported into Nigeria.

Today, Nigeria consumes 100, 000MT per annum and we have about 130 Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plants and 7,000 retailing outlets. If we can move the consumption level up to 750,000MT per annum, we expect to have about 250 LPG plants and 74,970 retailing outlets. About 2.5 mn cylinders are estimated to be in the country and over 70% of this volume are imported.

BARITE ORE TRADING IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Baryte is one of the important components used in the manufacturing of drilling mud or fluid used in the oil industries when prospecting for petroleum. It is a naturally occurring geological material which is wide spread in large quantity at various locations in Nigeria.

The name barites is derived from the Greek baryos meaning heavy or heavy spar, barite can occur in numerous colours; white, brown, yellow, red and gray are most common. The colours are the result of impurities such as iron, strontium and lead, and mineral contaminants such as clay and sand. Barite is insoluble in water and is resistant to acid attack.

The quality of barite is measured based on the specific gravity {S.G} of the product and a specific gravity of 4.2 and above is generally preferred.

Rising global energy demand and the high price of crude oil in the international market continues to fuel the discovery and development of oil fields across the world.

In Nigeria, the nation’s 35.3 billion barrels reserve is expected to continue to attract investors from all over the world and with the target of producing four million {4,000,000} per day by 2020 , barite ore would continue to be in demand.

Similar investment is going on the different parts of the world to meet up with the global demand for oil which is expected to double in 2020 and it further deepens the market for barite ore.

Barite has many applications; the most significant of it is its usage by the oil companies when drilling for crude oil or petroleum. Other importance of

Barites are highlighted below

• Used in the manufacturing of drilling mud without which petroleum prospecting will be impossible. In fact, the demand for Baryte by the oil companies is more than the demand for water by human beings but the supply is very low because only a very few individuals are aware of this business opportunity.

• Used by chemical industries in the manufacturing of Barium compounds such as chloride, nitrate, carbonate, and hydrate e.t.c.

• Used in paper and plastics productions

• Used by textiles industries as weighting materials

• It is also used metallurgical industries for Brass melting e.t.c.

• Also used in manufacturing glass, paints e.t.c

Because of the numerous uses of barite ore, there is steady and increasing demand for the product.

Nigeria has an estimated reserve of over two million {2,000,000} metric tons of barite ore scattered in different parts of the country to include Benue, Nassarrawa, Plateau and Cross River states.

Barite ore though locally available used to be imported into the country until the government placed a restriction on the importation of the product in order to encourage the local industry. It is one of the projects that can be exploited by both local and international investors to the benefit of the Nigerian economy which is the cardinal objective of the Nigeria oil and gas industry content development Act.

The return on investment on the trading of barite ore is estimated between 10%- 15% per transaction cycle which can be completed within ten days.

BITTER KOLA EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Export exists mainly in order to “transfer” commodities and services from areas of surplus to areas where they are lacking. There is no doubt that Nigeria has a comparative over other nations with regards to the export of agricultural produce because over 70% of the nation’s landmass is arable. One of such commodity that can be found in abundance especially in rural communities in Nigeria is bitter kola.

Bitter {Garcinia} Kola is one of the varieties of kola that can be found in the Nigeria and are mostly located in the southern parts of the country. Though there are no definite figures as to the annual production of the plant in Nigeria {because most are sourced from the wild the annual production} is estimated at between 130,000 MT – 150,000 MT annually.

Though about 90% of the current production of 150,000 MT is being consumed locally in the country, Bitter Kola {Garcinia} is in great demand in Britain, America, China, India and other Asian countries. It is used for food purposes apart from serving as raw materials in the pharmaceutical and food industry in the preparation of drugs, soft cola and energy drinks.
Because of the health use which bitter kola is put to, the exporter must ensure that the product is of good quality.

The product must be free of foreign materials like stones, dirty etc.

These growth and demand for bitter kola is being sustained by the growing demand for traditional medical therapy and energy drink industry.

It is pertinent to also say at this stage that the business of bitter kola export has been going on for quite some time throughout the world, although only very few people know about this lucrative business in Nigeria. The market is large, expanding and sustainable as the price keeps increasing throughout the world. Those few Nigerians that are aware of it have made their cool millions doing the business.

The product can be sourced mostly from southern part of the country in the following states in Ondo, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Ogun etc. The selling price is usually N 200 per KG.

Bitter Kola can be traded on a large or small scale. On a large scale, the order would be in tonnage and usually packaged in containers while for the small scale operations, the order is usually in kilograms and through courier companies like EMS, FEDEX, UPS, DHL and TNT.

Bitter Kola is also one of the products that can be exported to United States of America through the African Growth and Opportunity Act {AGOA}.
Currently a kilogram of bitter kola commands a price of between $15- $17 at the international market depending on the negotiating skills of the exporter and the size of shipment while at the local market, the price is about N 200 / kg.

The return on investment on the export of bitter kola is estimated between 10%- 15%.

The successful implementation of this business begins with the purchase of our detailed manual to ascertain the actual cost/benefit status of the project.
