Mining And Quarrying

PROVIDING QUALITY AND QUANTITY ASSURANCE AND CERTIFICATION SERVICES IN THE SOLID MINERAL INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

So much as been said about the abundance of rich mineral deposits in Nigeria with little or no emphasis on the other sectors like quality and quantity assurance and certification, where investors can invest and make good returns on there investment.

In one of my article which borders on the investment opportunities in the solid minerals industry in Nigeria, I mentioned about five {5} investment windows and one of such areas is offering of quality and quantity assurance and certification services especially on the local trading of the minerals in Nigeria.

Most of the quality and quantity assurance and certification companies working in Nigeria Cotecna, SGS, and BV Veritas are usually export oriented, that is , they focus more on goods that are scheduled for export and at such most of the operations and offices are located very close to the ports in the country while most of the goods for export as with the case of solid minerals comes from the Northern part of the country where they are no ports and by effect ,this creates a lot of problem for traders whom are only interested in trading the products locally because of the existence of international buyers in the ground.

Like you know, most of the mining activities in Nigeria is centered in Jos and at the moment the most credible quality and quantity assurance and certification firm in Nigeria is Nigeria Mining Cooperation {NMC} locate in Turdun Wada, Jos. They most handle the quality aspect while the quantity can be done in NASCO in Jos where they have a weigh bridge or weighing done with the use of a scale. I can remember some times last year, when we had to conduct a test on a sample and unfortunately the machine in NMC developed some technical fault and because they are the most trust worthy quality and quantity assurance and certification company {at least, that I know of} in Nigeria, we had to wait for weeks before the fault could be rectified and our samples tested.

For the benefit of those who need to know, an attempt would be made to define mineral and metal ore so that they would better understand the need for quality and quantity assurance and certification. Mineral is an inorganic substance found in nature with a characteristics chemical composition and in some cases, of definite crystal structure. The earth crust contains rocks of different composition with different physical properties, some hard, some soft.

Rocks are the materials which the earth’s upper crusts are made of. Rocks are themselves composed of minerals. Minerals are naturally occurring elements like Gold, or a compound such as Iron Oxide. If a rock contains a mineral from which a metal can be extracted at a profit, it is call an Ore. For example, copper Ore.

Given the above, it is therefore important to conduct quality and quantity test in order to ascertain the true content by percentage of the particular mineral of interest and given the local need for a credible quality and quantity assurance and certification firm, the business is highly required and desired.

Other services that can be considered by the investor include grinding and packaging services.

There is no doubt that quality and quantity assurance and certification is essential to the successful conclusion of a transparent transaction in the mineral ore trading business and any investors that invest in the quality and quantity assurance and certification business would no doubt have a growing and sustainable market.

GRANITE CHIPPINGS PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

The ever increasing deficit in housing supply and the need for he construction of the other important infrastructure would ensure that granite aggregates {chipping} which is a major raw material in the construction industry to be in constant demand.

Granite chippings production in Nigeria is very critical to the success of the construction industry in any country owning to the vital role they play in the industry and same could be said of Nigeria. The production as evolved over the years from the use of crude implements which are still in use in some part of the country to the use of high tech machinery and equipment. Granite chipping production is not only the most active segment of the mining industry in Nigeria but also one in which high tech equipment is used the most.

Granite chipping are rock aggregates derived from the blasting of rock to derive different sizes of boulders and then the reduction of the boulders to the desired sizes in the primary and secondary crushers. They are basically used in the construction of roads, houses and bridges and other construction activities.

Though the subject matter of this article is on the production of granite chipping from rocks, it is important to state that are also produced from granite quarry. Dimension stones are used in the decoration of homes. The World Bank study of 2009 did confirm that about 800,000 square meters of dimensions stones were imported into the country on yearly basis and out the whole demand of the economy, the country can only produce less than 5% indicating a large untapped market for the product.

The Market for granite aggregates is both local and international though more focus would be laid on the local market because there is a deficit in supply of the product in the country.

In 2004, studied reveal that there was a net production of about 15 Million MT whereas demand was 16.2 Million MT indicating a deficit in supply of 1.2 Million MT and these confirms the fact that there is a ready market for the product in the country.

Just like every mining activities in Nigeria, quarry operation is regulated by the ministry of solid minerals and steel development. Details of the legal requirement would be provided to interested clients.

A summary of the production of granite chippings is given below

In order to reduce the parent rock into smaller sizes , roles is drilled into the rock and they are loaded with blasting materials ready for blasting.

After the blasting of the rock to derive different sizes of boulders, before the aggregates can be reduced to the desired size, they would have to be crushed twice.

First in the primary crusher which done at the Jaw Crusher and at the Cone Crusher for the secondary crushing. It is at the cone crusher that the machine is adjusted to produce the different grades of granite aggregates like dust, rice, stone base, mable stone, 7/8 inch , 3 ¼ inch and ½ inch.

The plant comprises of the hopper, vibrating feeder, jaw crusher, hydraulic, cone crusher, vibrating screen, magnetic separator, belt conveyor and the control panel

The different grades of granite aggregates and there ex-site price as at the time of writing is given below.

Dust N2000/MT Ex-Site

Rice N1900/MT Ex-Site

Stone Base N2100/MT Ex-Site

Mable Stone N2200/MT Ex-Site

7/8 inch N1950/MT Ex-Site

3 ¼ inch N2100/MT Ex-Site

½ inch N2100/MT Ex-Site

The 3 ¼ and ½ inch grades is the most sorted grades.

COLUMBITE-TANTALITE {COLTAN} MINING IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Tantalite is among the group of minerals used in the refractory industry, and is characterized by a high melting point and strength at high temperature. These properties make them useful as furnace construction minerals and for application in the aerospace and electronic industries. Despite its high cost, tantalite is more cost effective in many applications, as down time and maintenance costs are reduced. In addition to these valuable properties, tantalum, as a refractory metal, shows remarkable resistance in many of the most hostile chemical environments.

Columbite, also called niobite, niobite-tantalite and columbate, is a black mineral group that is an ore of niobium and tantalum. It has a submetallic luster and a high density and is a niobate of iron and manganese, containing tantalate of iron.

Columbite and tantalite are collectively known as coltan in Africa. Tantalum is a valuable rare element used in electronics manufacturing while columbite is used in forming alloys that are useful in nuclear, aerospace and gas turbine engineering.

Rare-metal pegmatites containing economic concentrations of columbite-tantalite ore minerals (coltan) are widespread in the Pan-African (600±150Ma) basement of Nigeria. Thesepegmatites are also important sources of precious and semiprecious stones (such as beryl, aquamarine, tourmalines).

Until recently these pegmatites were known mainly from a broad 400km-long NE-SW trending belt stretching from the Wamba-Keffi- Nasarawa area (near the Jos Plateau) through Isanlu-Egbe in central Nigeria to the Ijero-Aramoko-llesha areas of southwest Nigeria, and a few occurrences in the Obudu and Oban massifs of southeast Nigeria.

Large deposits of Tantalite are known to occur in Nasarawa, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Cross Rivers, Gombe, Kogi States as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The. deposits are both alluvial and primary in the numerous pegmatite bodies that infest these areas. Grades of well over 50% Ta2O5 are found.

Tantalite currently commands a good international demand and price.

Granting of a Mining License to a prospective company is subject to proof of economic reserve of the mineral commodity for which a concession is sought. The process involves the company first applying to the Honourable Minister for Certificate of Entry into Mining Industry. The requirements for this include submission of the company’s Certificate of Registration, evidence of technical competence and of financial capability.

The next step is for the company to apply and obtain a prospecting right (PR) to enable it carry out general and scientific prospecting for the categories of minerals within the prospecting right. If properly conducted, work on this right will guide the company towards zeroing into a particular mineral within a specific land area.

The company will then put up application for an exclusive prospecting license (EPL) in the State Mines Office where the mineral is located. This is an exploration license for a particular mineral(s) over a particular land area which, by law, should not exceed 22 square kilometers. Once granted, the area is held exclusively to the company which will now confidently invest in mineral exploration work on the area without hindrance. This license is renewable every one or two years depending on the nature of the terrain.

It is only after the company has satisfied itself of the availability of the mineral in commercial quantity on the EPL that it will apply for grant of a Mining License over the whole or part of the area covered by the EPL.

In the course of all these processes, the law insists that the company employs the services of a “technically competent person” in carrying out the prospecting under the PR, the exploration within the EPL and finally the extraction of the mineral within the mining license area.

Some of the investment incentives in the solid minerals industry in Nigeria include

 3-5 years Tax Holiday

 Deferred royalty payments

 Possible capitalization of expenditure on exploration and surveys

 Extension of infrastructure such as roads and electricity to mining sites, and provision of 100% foreign ownership of mining concerns.

The services we offer include securing mining site / titles and in partnership with other professionals, conduct site survey and deposit evaluation. We also prepare feasibility study for clients interested in the trading of the commodity.

COAL MINING IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Solid minerals contributed immensely to the economic development of Nigeria in the pre-independence years. During this period, Nigeria was known for the production of coal as an energy source for electricity, railways and also for export.

Nigerian Coal is one of the most bituminous in the world owing to its low sulphur and ash content and therefore the most environmental friendly, given the need and campaign for cleaner source of energy in the recent past. There are nearly three billion {3,000,000,000} tonnes of indicated reserves in 17 identified coalfields and over 600 million tonnes of proven reserves in Nigeria. Some of the states where coal has been discovered in commercial quantity include Enugu, Benue, Kogi and Plateau States, respectively.

Coal is used as fuel and in industrial production of tar, gas and non edible oils. Arguably the most singular impediment to the attainment of the vision 20:2020 in Nigeria is power{ electricity} because of the direct bearing it has on other economic indicators like unemployment rate and low capacity utilization in the manufacturing sector. Nigeria has against the emphasis on gas for power generation, can tap into the rich coal deposit scattered in different parts of the country to generate electricity.

Nigeria presently generates about three thousand {3000} megawatts of electricity and it has been estimated that it would require at least forty thousand {40,000} megawatts to support her industrial and economic aspiration of being amongst the top twenty {20} economies in the world by the year 2020.

Comparatively, it has been estimated by experts that a coal powered plant would cost one-sixth the cost of powering the plant by gas and due to it use in powering railways, coal mining and processing is highly required.

Given the large deposits of brown coal in the tertiary sediments east and west of River Niger; Nigeria can cash in on foreign investors’ technology to produce coal pellets for industrial use, coal briquettes for domestic use; that is, to replace firewood and fight back desert encroachment and extreme weather conditions in the Northern part of the country.

A grant of a Mining License to a prospective company is subject to proof of economic reserve of the mineral commodity for which a concession is sought. The process involves the company first applying to the Honorable Minister for Certificate of Entry into Mining Industry.
