TOMATO PASTE RE-PACKAGING FROM TOMATOES PASTE DRUMS IN NIGERIA, HOW VIABLE?

Tomato is one of the major vegetable crops produced in Nigeria, being highly perishable in nature; it has a limited shelf life. It creates glut during it short production season and become very scarce and expensive during it off season, its short life and inadequate processing and preservation leads to loss of revenue to the farmers.

Nigeria is ranked the 2nd largest producer in Africa and 13th largest in the World producing 1.170 million tons of Tomato at an average of 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare. Despite this advantage Nigeria import processed Tomato Paste to the tune of 65.809 tones valued at N11.7 billion ($77.165million) in 2010.  The reason for this is not far-fetched, as not less than 40% of the Tomato produced in the country is lost due to lack of preservation, poor storage, humid wealth condition, transportation risk, escalated by poor marketing and absence of appropriate technology to harness these resources.

The market for tomato paste is national. With a population of over 160 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for tomato paste.

Tomato is important in our diets because it is rich in vitamins A and C and also fibre, and it is cholesterol free. Tomato fruit boasts of only 10 calories in every 42.28 grams.Tomato paste is a thick paste that is made by cooking tomatoes for several hours to reduce moisture, straining them to remove the seeds and skin, and cooking them again to reduce them to a thick, rich concentrate.

In contrast, tomato purée is a liquid with a consistency between crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, and consists of tomatoes that have been boiled briefly and strained.

The product would be packaged in 70g four‐side seal flat sachet (140*85mm).

The product would be packaged in 70g four‐side seal flat sachet (140*85mm) made from PET /AL /PE, PET / vmPET /PE, PET /PE, and PET / vm PET/NY. The sachets would be packaged in printed 3 ply corrugated carton sheets.

On an average, the consumption of tomato in Nigeria is 10 grams per person per day. For 160 million people, the demand would be 1,600 tons per day or 584,000 tons per annum.

Nigeria is a major consumer of tomato paste of which only between 20-30 percent is produced domestically; however, 25-50 percent of the input for this domestic paste is imported from China (CBN, 2011). This leaves the market for domestically produced tomato paste underserved.

Per capita consumption is still very low as compared to developed countries. For example, US consumption of tomato paste per capita is 30 kg per year, EU countries consume 15 kg per capita, and Turkey consumes 1 Kg Per capita. As compared to these figures, per capita consumption in Nigeria is negligible.
It shows that there is still big potential for demand from the local market, which is expected to rise with the passage of time.
