Sodium Silicate Production in Nigeria; The Opportunity.

Sodium silicate is the common name for compounds with the formula (Na2SiO2)nO. A well-known member of this series is sodium metasilicate, Na2SiO3. Also known as waterglass or liquid glass, these materials are available in aqueous solution and in solid form. The pure compositions are colourless or white, but commercial samples are often greenish or blue owing to the presence of iron-containing impurities.

Sodium silicate is made by fusing sodium carbonate and silica sand in an open hearth furnace. In most common commercial silicates, the ratio of sodium carbonate to silica, in molar basis is about 1.2. Other compositions are obtained by mixing and more alkaline ratios by adding caustic soda.

The product after cooling forms clear light bluish green glass. In all case, co2 comes out as a by-product.

Sodium silicate could be sold as a solution where the product is ground and dissolved in water or by steam, under pressure where the ratio of silica to alkali is above two.

The basic process of production is stated below

Raw Material Storage: The raw materials Silica is dumped in the yard while the Soda ash is stored in the ware house.

Batch Preparation: The raw materials are batched in proportion depending on the final product grade and specification.

Mixing:The batched mixture is ball milled for proper mixing and blending, this is done to prevent setting out during firing.

Charging: The blended materials are charged into the furnace operating at preset temperature for melting, the melting process is carried out in the furnace.

Melting: The solid materials turn to molten form.
Discharging: The molten material flows out through a sprout links, to a concrete floor and solidifies to rocky mass.

Testing: This is done for Quality control

Packaging: The sodium silicate is now packaged in 50kg long (solid) or 200L drum (liquid)

The equipment and machines required for the production of sodium silicate can be locally sourced and includes

– Furnace
– Autoclave
– Crusher
– Grinder
– Boiler
– Weighing Hoppers
– Dissolving tanks and agitators
– Mild Steel barrels

Sodium Silicate is used in soaps detergents and in the manufacture of silica gel. It is used as a cement, binder, filler and adhesive. And also used as a wall coating, in concrete, fire proofing material and as a sealant. It is also used to preserve eggs and wood. Sodium Silicate also finds use in textile and pharmaceutical industries. Neutral sodium silicate in liquid form is suitable for use in pharmaceutical and toilet preparations.

Sodium silicates of certain ratios are used for application over concrete floors for hardening making dustless concrete floors and protecting pervious building materials against the effects of moisture. Sodium silicate is also used in foundries and welding electrode industries.

In ceramic industries, sodium silicate is used as a deflocculant in the preparation of casting slips for keeping solid particles in suspension without settling. Sodium silicate is used in refractories industries as an air-setting bond for manufacturing refractory cements and mortars. In vitreous enamel industries, it is used for cleaning the metal, known as pickling, prior to enamelling.

Custard is a good substitute for breakfast cereals such as Quaker-oats, Conflakes, Ogi and other ready-to-serve cereals. Nutritionally, custard is a source of digestible carbohydrate for cheap energy supply and dietary fibre. Custard is obtained in dry form with a shelf life of over one year.

The raw materials needed are Edible Corn Starch, Tartrazine Yellow, Vanilla Flavour, Vitamin mix and Salt. They can be sourced locally. The machine and equipment required for custard can be locally sourced and included the Double Cone Stainless Steel Mixer, Filling And Packaging Machine, Stainless Steel Working Table and Weighing Machine.

The basic operations involved custard powder production are:

Weighing: The raw materials are accurately weighed in accordance to the recipe or formulation
Blending: The corn starch with other ingredients are thoroughly mixed together in a double cone mixer for about 15 – 20 minutes.
Discharging: The custard is discharged into plastic or metal stainless steel for packaging.

Essential Oil Production in Nigeria; The Opportunities.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Essential oil uses range from aromatherapy, household cleaning products, personal beauty care and natural medicine treatments.

The particles in essential oils come from distilling or extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels. In ancient times, Jews and Egyptians made essential oils by soaking the plants in oil and then filtering the oil through a linen bag.

Essential oil benefits come from their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These healing oils are rapidly growing in popularity because they act as natural medicine without any side effects.

As odorants, they are used in perfumes, lotions and other cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and other products ranging from animal feed to insecticides. As flavorants, they are present in a wide variety of foods, including soft drinks, baked products, ice creams, candy, confections, etc. As pharmaceutical ingredients, essential oils are used in dental products such as toothpaste, aromatherapy and phytotherapy products, and a large number of medicines.

There are more than 90 essential oils, and each has its own health benefits. Most essential oils blend well with other essential oils in terms of function and odor, which allows herbalists to prepare a vast repertoire of aromatic essential oil combinations.

Below is a list of essential oils that are currently being widely used and their application

Peppermint: Wonderful for digestive/respiratory function, energy, cooling, etc
Eucalyptus: Supports healthy respiration, skin, cleansing, etc
Ginger: Digestive support, grounding, cooking, antioxidant, etc
Orange: Emotional balance, overall health, cleansing/purifying, antioxidants, etc.
Peppermint: Wonderful for digestive/respiratory function, energy, cooling, etc
Lemon: For increasing energy, digestive and respiratory support, cleaning, etc
Lemongrass: Healthy digestion, supports muscles and joints, complexion, insects, etc
Lime: Cleans, detoxifies, energizes, healthy immune function, etc
Clove: Promotes cardiovascular health, oral health, immune health, etc
Black Pepper: Antioxidant; supports healthy circulation, flavoring, etc
Cardamom: Supports healthy digestion, respiratory health, cooking, etc

The process technology involves the following basic operations:

Drying: The raw materials is dried.
Weighing: The materials are weighed
Distillation: It involves extraction of the oil through steam distillation which forces the tiny intercellular pockets that hold the essential oils to open and release them.
Separation: The essential oil is separated the from the water, the film is then decanted or skimmed off the top.
Packaging: The essential oil is packaged appropriately ready for market.

In Nigeria, the currently industrial demand for essential oil is met through import. The market for essential oil is National. With a population of over 165 million people, estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum and an average economic growth rate of 3.5 % in the past five (5) years, Nigeria has a large ,expanding and sustainable market for essential.

The demand for the various types of essential oils is increasing with the expansion and establishment of the food, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industry and various chemical industries.

CASSAVA FLOUR PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban household’s cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.

Cassava alone contributes about 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.

Currently, the country produces about 40,000,000 tonnes of the commodity and due to the desire of the federal government to reduce import dependency and conserve of scare foreign exchange, there is national programme aimed at increasing the production cassava flour to be substituted with wheat flour.

High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} is made by cooking, drying and grinding cassava root to a fine powder. It differs from Tapioca flour in that Tapioca flour is made from the starch of the cassava plant where the cassava flour is the ground root.

High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} is used as substitute for wheat flour in bakery and confectionary products.

The demand for High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} in Nigeria is high. The driving force behind the demand is the federal government policy on cassava flour inclusion in wheat flour for cassava wheat composite flour production especially for bread and confectionary baking.

The annual national demand for High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} is estimated at 750,000 tonnes while the national supply estimate is about 50,000 tonnes. The High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} industry in Nigeria is dominated by small scale with production capacity of less than 0.1 tons per day. The production plants are usually found all parts of Nigeria where the chief raw material, Cassava tubers, can be found.

The major challenges facing the industry are access to power. Non availability of power hampers production and increases the cost of production.

High Quality Cassava Flour {HQCF} is also used in the paper board and plywood industries.

The major machinery and equipment for production of cassava are

· Granulator

· Flash Fryer

· Hydraulic Press

· Detoxifier

· Vibro Sieve

· Hammer Mill Grater

· Hammer Mill with Cyclone

· Packaging Machine

· Weighing Machine

It is estimated that at 10% inclusion, the demand by flour millers is 550,000 tonnes.

From the above figures, it is clear that there is a large and sustainable market for cassava flour in Nigeria.
