Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban household’s cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.
Cassava alone contributes about 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.
Currently, the country produces about 40,000,000 tons of the cassava tubers annually and in order to arrest the problem of post harvest loss, it is important to process cassava tubers to cassava chips/ pellets.
Cassava chips are unfermented white dried products of cassava with an average diameter of 3mm – 5mm obtained from freshly harvested Cassava roots. They are often used as a carbohydrate base in the animal feed industry particularly in Europe, or milled into flour for other uses such as in the production of ethanol, cakes, dough-nut and biscuits.

The estimated demand for Cassava Chips in Nigeria was found to be in excess of 1,500,000T/annum. There is a high export demand in China especially for ethanol production.
The EU Animal Feeds Industry is the biggest consumer and importer of the product because of their large animal husbandry industry. They imported about 6.9million tones of Cassava products in 2000.
