MUSCOVITE MICA SHEET EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria is endowed with several mineral commodities which are widely distributed. The Country was once a major mineral producer, accounting for substantial production of Cassiterite (tin), Gold, Coal, Lead/Zinc Sulphides, Tantalite and Columbite.

The Geology of Nigeria is comparable to those of other countries where world class deposits have been found. There are over thirty-four mineral commodities spread across the entire Country.

Some of the known mineral resources include: Gold, Coal, Bitumen, Iron Ore, Tantalite/Columbite, Lead/Zinc Sulphides, Barytes, Cassiterite, Gemstones, Talc, Feldspar and Muscovite mica.

Muscovite is a phyllosilicate mineral of aluminium and potassium. It has a highly-perfect basal cleavage yielding remarkably-thin laminæ (sheets) which are often highly elastic.

Muscovite is the most common mica, found in granites, pegmatites, gneisses, and schist’s, and as a contact metamorphic rock or as a secondary mineral resulting from the alteration of topaz, feldspar, kyanite, etc. In pegmatites, it is often found in immense sheets that are commercially valuable. Muscovite is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant. The name of muscovite comes from Muscovy-glass, a name formerly used for the mineral because of its use in Russia for windows.

Nigeria has a large deposit of muscovite mica and is mainly concentrated in the Northern Part of the country because of the peculiar geology of the area. Some of states in Nigeria where muscovite can be found include Kogi, Nassarawa,Cross River, Kaduna, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Kastina, Kebbi, Kogi, Ogun, Osun, Plateau and FCT.

Muscovite is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant. The demand for the commodity is strong and growing. Mica is supplied in two forms: scrap/flake and sheet. Some producing countries specify only on one form (like USA or Brazil), some can produce both (like Russia).

Mica finds its main use as a gypsum wallboard joint compound, where it acts as a filler and extender, provides a smoother consistency, improves workability, and prevents cracking. Therefore scrap/flake mica volumes are much higher than sheet.

World leader in mica production is China with over 30% market share. Second place is held by USA having 27.3% of world output.

The return on investment in the export of muscovite mica sheets is estimated between 10%- 15% per transaction.
