COWPEA {BEANS} DECORTICATING AND DE-STONING SERVICE IN NIGERIA.

Though much of the countries revenue is earned through royalty from oil and gas production, it is widely agreed that Agriculture has the potential of been the bedrock of the Nigerian economy, because of the abundance of good arable land, good climatic condition and cheap labour. However, in spite of the nations natural endowment in agricultural resources, the potential of the sector is yet to be fully realized due to the fact majority of the production is still done with crude implement which brings about a lot of drudgery and makes agriculture less attractive to the youth which constitutes over 60% of the population.

Nigeria is produces a lot of agricultural products which includes cowpea {beans}.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a grain legume largely grown in the northern part of Nigeria which has a savannah type of vegetation with light rainfall. Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of cowpea, as it produces over 2.7 million metric tones of cowpeas with an average yield per hectare of 417 kg. It produces the white and brown varieties.

One major achievement of the present civilian administration in Nigeria in the past eleven (11) years has been the growth of middle class which has been witnessed in the country. These growths continues to drive the increasing social and health awareness of the need for hygienically well prepared foods required for good quality living standard of the people.

This much has continued to create the demand for better processed or decorticated cowpea {bean} seed required for human consumption. Decortication is a process of removing the husk covering the seed of a plant, in this case cowpea seed. Groundnut is another agricultural produce that requires decortication.

After the product has been decorticated, they are taken to the de-stoning machine to remove the stones, after which they would be ready for packing and sale in the market.

In terms in of cost, cowpea presents one the best option for the nation to meet her protein need. Nigeria, with a population of about 150 million people is grossly underprovided with an essential food component, protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian. In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.This scenario is compounded more so when  the volume of  egg supply is very low, being  10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day.

Establishing a cowpea decorticating and de-stone services in agricultural is no doubt a viable business and would bring us closer to meeting our protein demands.
