Nigeria is known to have records of mining dating back to 1905 and so much has been said about the abundant deposit of minerals in Nigeria especially on the 35 industrial minerals which the ministry of solid minerals and steel development in Nigeria has chosen to concentration on because they have good international market and Nigeria have abundant deposit of the minerals.
In addition to the 35 industrial minerals that the ministry of solid mineral development in Nigeria wants to concentrate on, we at Foraminifera Market Research would like to identify other minerals with increasing demand in the international market and proven deposits in the country with the aim of popularizing the mining and export of the mineral in Nigeria.
One of such minerals is, Lithium Ore. Lithium is a soft, silver-white metal that belongs to the alkali metal group of chemical elements. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. Because of its high reactivity, lithium never occurs free in nature, and instead, only appears in compounds, usually ionic ones. Lithium occurs in a number of pegmatitic minerals, but is also commonly obtained from brines and clays. On a commercial scale, lithium is isolated electrolytic ally from a mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride. In Nigeria, minerals containing lithium ore can be found mainly in Northern part of the country and they are used in the production of mobile phone batteries.
At present there are no mining or processing facilities for lithium in Nigeria. Nigeria consumes a huge amount of lithium final products such as mobile phone battery. Lithium applications are used in more than 60% of mobile phones and because of its specific heat capacity, the highest of all solids, lithium is often used in coolants for heat transfer applications.
The country can benefit from the mining, processing and export of lithium ore given the importance of lithium in our economy, efforts should be intensified in geological exploration activities aimed at locating economic lithium ore deposits that will form the basis of operating processing plants.
The entrepreneur can also go into the trading and export of lithium ore in Nigeria.
