Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban households cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.

Cassava alone contributes about 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.

Description

Currently, the country produces about 40,000,000 tons of the cassava tubers annually and due to the desire of the federal government to reduce import dependency and conserve of scare foreign exchange, there is national programme aimed at increasing the production cassava flour to be substituted with wheat flour.

It has been established through research that High Quality Cassava Flour can be used in the production of adhesive.

Adhesives are substances that are capable of holding materials together either by chemical or mechanical attraction. Adhesives may be referred to as glues or pastes, which are available either as ready-for use liquids or as dry powders or gums.

This feasibility report is to examine the financial viability or otherwise of producing adhesive in Nigeria using cassava flour as basic raw material.

The demand for adhesive in Nigeria is high. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for adhesive.

Different types of adhesives can be formulated to meet the requirement of different end users. This makes the business very versatile. It therefore, implies that a producer can decide to specialize in producing a particular type of adhesive or may produce different types based on demand to meet the needs of different end users.

Large percentage of the nation’s adhesive need is met through importation whereas domestic production accounted for only few percentage of the total supply. It is estimated that the nation’s demand for various forms of adhesives is in excess of 350, 000 metric tonnes per annum.
